Crufts 2025: Abbey Mahn’s journey to represent Canada in Junior Handling

March 04, 2025
The excitement is building as Crufts, one of the world’s most prestigious dog shows, draws near. From March 6 to 9, 2025, Canadian Junior Handler Abbey Mahn will step into the ring to represent Canada at this iconic event. We caught up with Abbey to hear about her journey to Crufts, what she’s looking forward to, and the heartfelt message she wants to share with the Canadians cheering her on from home.

Abbey’s journey to Crufts

Abbey’s passion for Junior Handling began at just 4 years old, when she entered the PeeWee Junior Handling class. “It has been an incredible, hands-on learning experience that spans nearly my entire life,” she shared. As Abbey grew older, her commitment to the sport deepened, with each new challenge strengthening her skills.

Abbey has earned many accolades throughout her journey, including winning her first Reserve Best in Show with her Schipperke, Fiona, and claiming the title of Canadian Junior Handling National Champion. These moments, and countless others, reflect her dedication to the sport and her love of working with dogs.

Now, Abbey’s hard work and perseverance are leading her to Crufts in March 2025, an incredible opportunity to represent Canada on the world stage. “I feel deeply honoured and privileged to be representing Canada at such a prestigious event,” she says, reflecting on the significance of the upcoming show.

Support from home

Throughout her journey, Abbey has received tremendous support from the Canadian dog show community. “The community has been incredibly supportive, providing invaluable encouragement and guidance that has helped shape me into the handler I am today,” Abbey explains.

Abbey’s journey wouldn’t be the same without the love and encouragement from home. “Knowing that so many of you are supporting me from back home makes this experience even more meaningful. Thank you for being part of this incredible journey!” she says, expressing her gratitude for the people cheering her on.

Preparing for the big stage

Preparing for a high-profile event like Crufts requires both mental and physical preparation. Abbey’s approach is grounded in building a strong bond with her dog, which is essential for trust and communication in the ring. “I focus on building a strong bond with the dog, which is essential for trust and communication,” Abbey explains. “Remaining calm is also key – if I’m composed, my dog will be, too.”

However, at Crufts, Abbey won’t know the dog she’ll be competing with until the final moments before the event. Abbey prepares by expanding her knowledge of various breeds. "I focus on learning about different breeds, and with experience showing numerous breeds across all seven groups, I’m always striving to improve my skills," she explains. While she has enjoyed working with many breeds, Flat-Coated Retrievers hold a special place in her heart for their unique personalities. "They keep me on my toes and challenge me to grow as a handler," Abbey says. This broad preparation and adaptability are key to Abbey’s success, no matter which dog she’s paired with at Crufts.

The heart of the message: Inspire and support

Abbey’s journey is not only about her own achievements but also about the dedication of young Canadian handlers who are making their mark on the dog show world. “This journey takes hard work, patience, and an unbreakable bond between handler and dog,” Abbey reflects. “I’m proud to represent the dedication and passion that young Canadian handlers bring to the sport.”

Abbey hopes that her story will inspire others, especially young handlers, to pursue their dreams and connect with the amazing partnership we share with our dogs. “No matter the outcome at Crufts, I hope to inspire others to follow their dreams and celebrate the amazing bond we have with our dogs,” she says.

For anyone considering getting involved in the dog world, Abbey has some valuable advice: “Be prepared to make a significant investment of time, money, and dedication. Showing up to the ring is just the beginning – caring for a dog requires a lifelong commitment to providing proper care, maintenance, and training.”

A heartfelt acknowledgment

Abbey is quick to acknowledge the significant influence her grandmother has had on her journey. “My Grandma has provided me with invaluable hands-on experience and breed-specific knowledge, which has greatly contributed to my success in the show ring,” Abbey shares. Her grandmother, a breeder of Flat-Coated Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, and Schipperkes, has played a key role in Abbey’s growth as a handler.

Looking ahead to Crufts 2025

As Abbey prepares for Crufts 2025, she reflects on all that she has learned and accomplished. “This experience has been a journey of growth, learning, and achieving my goals,” she says. Abbey’s story is a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished with passion, hard work, and the unwavering support of a community.

Abbey’s message to all Canadians: “Thank you for your support! It means the world to me. I’m excited to represent Canada at Crufts, and I hope to bring back not only great memories but also inspiration for others to follow their dreams in the dog world.”

Good luck, Abbey!
