Six of the CKC’s most common inquiries answered
The Canadian Kennel Club employs a team of hard working Membership Services representatives. The team consists of both English and French speaking staff. The team takes calls, email and even corresponds via Live Chat on www.ckc.ca from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST, Monday to Friday. While many issues pertaining to dogs are complicated and do require a conversation with a membership services representative, many questions have fairly straight forward answers, so I asked a member of the team to send me a few commonly asked questions for the first in a series of blogs on the CKC’s FAQs.
WHY HAVEN’T I RECEIVED MY CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRATION FROM THE BREEDER YET?
This is a very common concern for new puppy owners. Since any dog advertised and sold as purebred must be registered or registerable with The Canadian Kennel Club or other registry body and registration papers must be issued; it is the responsibility of the seller to provide these papers at no additional cost to the buyer within six months from date of sale of the dog. It’s important to note that last sentence says “date of sale” not “date of birth”. If you brought your puppy home at 8 weeks of age, then the breeder has until your dog is 8 months old to send you the certificate. If there is a condition in the contract, the seller would then have six months from the time the condition has been met to provide the purchaser with the certificate of registration.
If six months from the date of sale has passed, then you should know that Section 29.1 of the Club’s By-laws states, “When a dog is sold or otherwise disposed of as purebred for a consideration (monetary or otherwise)… the person disposing of the dog shall, within six months after the date of sale, take the necessary action to provide the new owner with a Canadian certificate of registration on which is recorded the change of ownership.” Therefore, once the six month time period has lapsed, the CKC can pursue a complaint on your behalf against the breeder for the non-delivery of your certificate of registration, provided there are no conditions in a contract pertaining to the sale of the dog in question. WHICH FOREIGN KENNEL CLUBS DOES THE CKC RECOGNIZE?
In order for a Canadian born dog to be eligible for registration with the Canadian Kennel Club, both parents of the dog must be registered with the CKC or be registered with a club whose stud books the CKC recognizes. If the puppy was born in Canada, the Dam must be registered with the CKC. If the sire resides in Canada, he must also be fully registered with the CKC.
In order to find out if the club your dog (or puppy’s parent) is registered with is a club whose stud books the CKC recognizes, head to www.ckc.ca and scroll down to the bottom of the homepage. Under the heading “Legal”, you can click on Policy + Procedures. In Chapter 4, “Registration”, on page 4:46 you will find the list of recognized foreign stud books.

CAN I REGISTER MY DOG WITH DNA TESTING?
One cannot gain registration simply by DNA test. Although DNA may prove the dog is purebred, the test wouldn’t provide the parentage/lineage in the dog’s background, which is necessary for Canadian Kennel Club registration.
HOW DO I REGISTER MY LITTER THAT WAS SIRED BY A STUD DOG THAT RESIDES IN THE U.S?
First of all, congratulations on your new litter! Because you have used a US stud dog to sire your litter, you must complete the application to register a litter born in Canada and when you have completed your section of the litter application, please forward it to the US owners of the stud dog for their signatures on Section B of the application. A clear/legible photocopy of the stud dog’s AKC pedigree must accompany your litter application.
Once the stud dog owners have signed the application, it must be forwarded to the American Kennel Club for their signature on the bottom left hand side of the application. This AKC signature is official confirmation of the ownership of the stud dog at the time of mating.
When using a foreign stud dog, there is an additional Administrative Fee on top of the litter application fee; the administrative fee for CKC members is $
13.00* (plus tax) and for non-members of the CKC the admin fee is
$26.00(plus tax) in addition to the litter registration fee.

WHERE CAN I FIND A BREEDER SO I CAN PURCHASE A PUPPY?
It’s important to know that the Canadian Kennel Club does not recommend individual breeders.
On our website, you will find the Puppy List under the heading Choosing A Dog or you can find it directly at www.thepuppylist.ca . The Puppy List is a list of CKC Members who are in good standing with CKC and you can contact them via email, directly through our website.

Once you have chosen a breeder, you are welcome to contact the CKC’s Member Services Department and they can make sure the breeder is in good standing with the Canadian Kennel Club. All CKC Member Breeders must follow a
Code of Practice and
Code of Ethics.
HOW DO I REGISTER MY DOG IMPORTED TO CANADA FROM THE US?
If your dog was imported to Canada from the US, you will need to complete the application for registration of a foreign born dog imported to Canada and submit it to the CKC with a clear/legible photocopy of the AKC certificate (indicating your ownership and Canadian address) and a clear/legible photocopy of the 3 generation AKC certified pedigree.
Please be advised that as of May 31, 2019, the AKC is issuing Export Pedigrees for US born dogs that are exported to different countries. If you are in possession of the certificate of registration and pedigree that was issued prior to May 31, 2019, we will accept it for registration purposes.

Dogs that are under LIMITED REGISTRATION with the American Kennel Club are not eligible for full registration. The Limited Registration status must be lifted from the AKC’s records prior to applying for registration with the CKC.

The fees to process an application for a foreign born dog that was imported to Canada depend upon when the dog entered Canada, please see below:

All the fees noted above are in Canadian funds and applicable taxes must be added to these fees. Non-members of CKC must forward payment with work submitted. Payment must be made in the form of certified cheque, money order, Visa or MasterCard.
Please provide proof of importation to Canada by providing a copy of the Airway Bills received if the dog was flown into Canada; alternatively, if the dog was driven across a Canadian border and you are not in possession of any custom documents, please provide a written explanation to this effect.
