Prioritizing Canine Health and Well-Being in the 2025 Federal Election

As the 2025 federal election approaches, Canadians will be faced with important discussions surrounding economic issues, trade, and tariffs. However, the Canadian Kennel Club is also advocating for the health and well-being of dogs across the nation, especially in relation to the regulation of dog importation.

CKC members play a crucial role in bringing this issue to the forefront of political discourse. To ensure that the well-being of dogs remains a priority, we encourage all members to contact their local federal candidates using this template letter and ask them to make commitments on two key issues:
  1. Safe and fair dog importation and exportation: CKC is calling for a review of the federal dog importation rules to address the growing concerns about the mass importation of dogs carrying potential animal and zoonotic diseases. Additionally, we advocate for the prevention of tariffs on dogs crossing the U.S. border for travel, personal pets, sport, competitions, and responsible breeding.
  2. Investing in public education: Raising awareness about responsible dog ownership and pet acquisition is critical. CKC encourages federal candidates to support and fund public education initiatives that promote responsible practices among pet owners.
By engaging with candidates, CKC members can help amplify the importance of these issues and push for stronger safeguards in dog importation, animal health, and public education. Your voice matters, and together we can influence the policies that impact both our dogs and our communities.
