CKC Encouraged by Recent CDC Update Re: Dog Importation Rule

We are pleased to provide the latest update regarding the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Dog Importation Rule.

Most recently, CDC advised that it will revisit the dog importation rule and propose revisions and certifications to the existing requirements in early 2025. According to a press release from U.S. Senator Susan Collins' office, CDC aims to strike the right balance of preventing the importation of dog rabies, while minimizing the burden on people traveling with their dogs from rabies-free and low-risk countries, including Canada. The release also notes that CDC intends to amend and clarify the requirements for the importation of dogs, including requirements for dog importations from rabies-free and low-risk countries, such as Canada, into the United States.

Since the implementation of the dog importation rule in August 2024, CKC has been advocating for responsible CKC members who travel with/transport their Canadian-born, CKC registered dogs, and work across borders to improve canine health, diversify breeding programs, utilize veterinary services, and participate in sporting and goodwill events. We remain concerned that the 6-month minimum age requirement is disproportionately impacting CKC members who responsibly own, train and breed their Canadian born, CKC-registered dogs in Canada. We continue to urge CDC to recognize the unique and low-risk profile of Canadian-born, CKC-registered dogs and grant an exception to the current U.S. import requirement of a 6-month minimum age for dogs.

We appreciate the support of our valuable members, and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (who continues to negotiate with CDC) to advance our advocacy efforts regarding the CDC dog importation rule and reiterate the low-risk status of Canadian-born, CKC-registered dogs. The current measures will remain in place until the new rules are published, and we will continue to monitor the upcoming changes and provide further updates, once more information is available. If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected].
