I am pleased to offer as a candidate for Zone One. I have been a passionate supporter of purebred dogs and CKC events for over three decades. I am confident the members of Zone One will be active participants in the future of the CKC. Together we can offer ideas and solutions to maintain the financial solvency of our club, increase membership and improve the profile of purebred dogs and the Canadian Kennel Club. I offer transparent, straight forward leadership and will always be open to your opinions and ideas. I will give every decision at the board table, intelligent, thoughtful consideration.

I am a CKC Life Member and a breeder/exhibitor of Doberman Pinschers under the Edelmar prefix. My club commitments include: Vice-President, DPCC; Member, DPCA; and President and Show Chair of the Dartmouth Kennel Club (operating solidly in the black!). Judging matches/sweeps, ring stewarding and organizing public-education events are a few examples of my active volunteer club participation. I am eager to be a part of growing the CKC in all disciplines, including the next generation; our youth!

Now retired, with extensive management and business experience, my focus will be the members of Zone One and the CKC.

I am a breeder and exhibitor of Standard Schnauzers and a participant in performance events. My areas of interest include reproduction, health and genetics, which I have been studying actively in the recent years. I am keenly devoted to the health and welfare of our dogs and in the success of our Club.

I bring to the position 35 years of varied business experience. I am a graduate of McGill University and the University of Ottawa and a professional accountant, CPA (CMA). I am also a Fellow of the Society of Management Accountants of Canada (FCMA).

My experience comprises 10 years of merchandising operations in major retail and services organizations; 25 years of program and financial management, of which 12 were at the executive level.

I have also had the privilege of serving as the Chair of the Audit Committee for the CKC for 5 years.

I have served on the Board of the Society of Management Accountants of Canada and as President for the Society of Management Accountants of Nova Scotia, and have been a lecturer at McGill University in Management Accounting.

I believe that my varied background and solid experience would be an asset for the Canadian Kennel Club.

H. Brian Reid

H. Brian Reid P. I have been a member in good standing of the CKC since November 1988, even before I started showing dogs in 1989. My one and only breed has been Afghan Hounds ever since. Although I am not a breeder per say, I’ve been involved in several aspects of the fancy, either as an exhibitor, ring steward, Afghan Hound Club of Canada director and the 2011 National specialty organiser for AHCC. I even held handling classes.

I am fluently bilingual and hold a bachelor’s degree in accounting. I manage my own tax preparation services practice, so I understand how a business should be run. I think my professional background will come in handy when preparing budgets and making final decisions.

I use my logic when it comes down to problem solving and try to find the best solution possible and available at the time. Because of my professional background, I am used to abiding by a code of ethics and understanding rules and regulations. I also learned how to listen to people’s concerns.

I believe that, with all these assets, I can do an excellent job when representing Quebec at Board of Directors’ meeting.

I am running for a seat on the Canadian Kennel Club Board of Directors as your representative.

For the last two years I have been a member of the CKC’s Event Officiating Committee. I am a registered mutual funds representative and a financial planner. I am currently a compliance officer at the head office of a large Canadian mutual fund dealer.

Involved in the dog show world since 1975 and with Société Canine de uébec of which I am President, I am an instructor of show handling and pet training. I have shown dogs of all groups and have participated in events in 5 provinces, several U.S. states and even Crufts. I volunteer at various jobs in show, rally and obedience with a few clubs. Since April 2014, I am a permit judge for 18 breeds in Group 1.

I believe we have to restore purebred dogs’ and good breeders’ reputation with the public and find ways to increase participation to the different events and support the clubs.

My 40 years of experience in the dog show world will allow me to promote your interests and those of the purebred dogs.

Over the past 42 years I have served on the Board of Directors of the CKC, National Breed Clubs and All-Breed Kennel and Obedience Clubs. I have travelled extensively throughout all parts of our vast zone gaining valuable experience, which qualifies me to understand the problems faced by the breeder, exhibitor and event-sponsoring club, and to provide realistic policies and solutions to the challenges facing our members.

As a former CKC Director, I have been a strong voice for Ontario North and will continue to act as an ombudsman with the CKC for members and all clubs.

Some of the problems of declining interest in purebred dogs and our activities caused by tough economic times and competition from other leisure activities need to be addressed if our sport is to continue to thrive. I look forward to working on these important challenges in the future.

I promise to continue to devote the energy and hard work necessary to be successful in my position as Director. The experience and respect I have gained throughout the years will be put to good use in my commitment to the betterment of our members, breeders, exhibitors, clubs, purebred dogs and the CKC.

I am a life member of the CKC and have been involved since 1975 after obtaining and exhibiting my first purebred Afghan. Since that time I have owned Salukis, a Dachshund, and more recently, a Cairn terrier. I also spent a great number of years attending 120 shows per year as a handler, showing some of the top dogs of the time.

Six years ago I ran for a position on the CKC Board of Directors, to give something back to the sport. I am now seeking my third and final term on the Board.

The first term was stressful as the CKC struggled to avoid bankruptcy. The Board made some extremely tough decisions to right the ship, and currently the CKC is solvent with budgetary amounts earmarked for improvements to the computer system. I wish to continue to represent the members in Zone 5 to ensure these programs come to fruition.

During my terms in office I have been very visible and approachable at conformation, agility, obedience, hunt tests and retriever trials and many other CKC events. I pride myself in responding to the members and having a pulse on the dog scene both locally and nationally.

I once again ask for your confidence and vote.

I have been breeding Neapolitan Mastiffs since 1988 under the Baby Blue Kennel name and was very active working with the CKC to get full breed recognition. I have bred/owned the #1 Neapolitan Mastiff in Canada every year since official recognition. I am Past President of the Canadian National Neapolitan Mastiff Club, Past President of the Canadian Molosser Association and past Vice President of the RBCSWO. I have presented breed seminars for judge’s study groups throughout Ontario.

In 2005, I helped fight a breed ban in my municipality. I want to represent the breeders, as they are the backbone of the CKC. I have no current plans to judge, but have been invited to judge specialties in Lima and Mexico City, based on my breed experience. I am active in the show community and will work hard to represent the members and make shows welcoming to new members.

I had a CVA stroke in 2010. I am a fighter and went from being paralyzed on my left side to being able to walk and function with a small amount of weakness on my left side. I worked very hard for this.

I worked for Toronto Transit Commission for 26 years and now I stay at home with my dogs.

I am a Life member of the Canadian Kennel and have the honour of being a life member of the London Canine Association Inc. and the Airedale Terrier Club of Canada. For nearly a quarter century I bred and showed my Airedales under the Premiaire prefix. I helped found the Rare Breed Club of South Western Ontario, running conformation shows and helping a number of the purebred unrecognized breeds move from the Miscellaneous Class to the CKC list of recognized breeds. Upon my retirement I obtained a purebred Cane Corso and have been actively involved in the conformation and obedience elements of our Club’s shows. I continue to attend CKC Board meetings and endeavour to keep our membership informed of the Board activities with my own personal observations. I am now and will continue to advance the interests of purebred dogs here in Zone 6 – Ontario West and throughout our nation.

Beyond showing, my other roles in the dog fancy include past-president and other executive positions for the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club of Canada, the Centennial Dog Obedience Club and the current president of Trafalgar Dog Sport. I have worked actively to support the clubs and exhibitors in my zone through my 12+ years as a Zone 6 Obedience representative. As a Life member of the CKC, I am committed to doing all I can to develop and promote a strong purebred dog community in Canada.

As your CKC Director for the last six years I have been working at keeping the CKC and our Zone financially viable. I have brought in changes such as: dates on motions, the Baby Puppy Class, The Select Dog (Grand Champion Excellent), the four puppy group placements, the Master Breeder programs among others.

Only half the current Board members are seeking re-election, and if some of these are not successful we will have lost a huge reservoir of knowledge. I feel that it is important to maintain some sense of continuity from Board to Board, thus I have decided to seek a third term as Director

I have been a CKC all-breed judge for 20 years and have been breeding Golden and Flat-coated Retrievers (40+ years), having produced 140+ CKC and 73 AKC Champions and numerous Obedience and Agility Champions.

I am a retired High School teacher and hold BEd, BSc, and MSc degrees. I have served on the Executive of several All-breed and Specialty clubs and held all the Executive positions. I was a thirteen year Director of The Cambridge Humane Society and on the City of Cambridge Dangerous Dog Bylaw Committee (12+ years).

I look forward to serving this Zone for another term.

I am a proud Life Member of the Canadian Kennel Club. During my years as a Member I have been an active breeder/exhibitor both in Canada and abroad. I have served as your Director for the last 3 years and worked with dedication for the members in my Zone and across Canada.

Amongst my other opportunities to serve the Club, I sat on the committee for the first CKC Breed Standard Book, the Appeals Committee and as Chairman of the Club Relations Committee, this term. When I attended CKC Board meetings as a regular member in the gallery it was because I had grave concerns about the direction in which the Club has been and is heading. I have spoken with many Members, and see the following areas of concern as being important for the Board of Directors to address: transparency, communications, efficiency and ongoing representation.

There are many ways the CKC Board could reduce the red tape, improve communications and efficiency. The Club’s survival is dependant on the Membership. With the increasing pressure from legislators, Animal Rights Groups and puppy mills, the CKC must become proactive in promoting the benefits and responsibilities of purebred dogs and Club Membership and embrace the fundamental purpose of our club.

Late in 1987, my wife and I welcomed a male Boxer puppy into our home. The following year, we joined the Canadian Kennel Club and I put a championship on our puppy. So began my involvement in the world of purebred dogs.

Since then, I have: taught puppy classes; participated in obedience trials and conformation shows; taken tracking lessons; joined the Boxer Club of Canada (life member and current President); joined the American Boxer Club; joined the Prairie Canine Academy (current vice president); performed Show Superintendent duties for the Prairie Canine Academy; and performed duties as ring steward for various clubs in Western Canada and Ontario.

My wife and I have the registered prefix, Zaracon. Our Boxers have participated in and obtained titles/certificates in obedience, agility, herding, lure coursing and conformation in Canada and the States, including wins/awards at national and regional specialties.

I am undergoing the process for dog show judging in Canada and am licensed for the first half/on permit for the second half of the Working Group. I have judged sweeps at specialties for Boxers, Samoyeds and Siberians, and also judged the Minnesota Boxer Club Specialty this past summer.

I have been involved with the breeding and exhibiting of dogs since 1982. My primary breed is Whippets, but I also have bred and exhibited Dachshunds. Under the Brushwood prefix I have bred many Whippet champions and Best in Show winners, including multi BIS/BISS Am. Can. Ch. Brushwood Moxi of Endeavor, multiple American Whippet Club and Canadian Whippet Club BOB winner. Although I have scaled down my breeding program over the past few years, I continue to co-breed the occasional litter.

Over the course of my years of breeding and exhibiting dogs, I also have been actively involved with local kennel clubs. I am past-President of the Lethbridge and District Kennel Club, and am currently Vice-President of the Evelyn Kenny Kennel and Obedience Club. As well, I have volunteered my time to other clubs over the years. I have always believed it is important to actively contribute to the sport that has supported my many years of enjoyment and success as a breeder and exhibitor of purebred dogs.

For 35 years I have worked in the field of education. Currently I am Dean of the Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary.

I became involved in dogs following graduation from UBC. I am now retired following more than 30 years as a senior legal assistant, the majority of which time was spent working for a senior corporate/commercial counsel.

I have served three terms as CKC Director for B.C. Southwest (1994-6, 1996-9 and 2012-14) and during those times either chaired, or was a member of, the following committees/councils: Legislation, Club Relations, Versatility (now split into Draft Dog and Herding), Conformation, Event Officiating, CEO Review, Board Education and Orientation and Junior Handling.

I have also been show secretary/superintendent for specialty and all-breed clubs, an AKC-licensed superintendent, ring steward, as well as having held various executive capacities in all-breed and specialty clubs.

We have a number of internal and external challenges facing us (not the least of which is the future of the APA), and new programs to implement to benefit our members. We need to “stop the bleeding” in our core business – that is to say stop the steady decrease in registrations and show entries, the latter being a natural progression from the former. People need to be proud of purebred dogs and everything they represent and to embrace the desire to own at least one.

In 1948, I bought a Doberman puppy, first show he growled at a Judge and Thor’s show career ended. As a jockey apprentice, I ended up in the hospital for three months. Thor went to live with my sister, a babysitter for twin girls. I joined the Navy, and served fifteen years. On release I worked for Canada Custom for twelve years, and joined CKC 1963.

Weekends I worked for Gene Hahnlen, and Mrs. Pat Tripp. I was granted an AKC All Breed Handler’s license #RO1455, and handled in Canada, USA, Bermuda, Mexico, Europe and Hawaii.1989 we formed Western Dog Shows Ltd. In 2002, I was elected Director and again in 2005 and 2008. For the next term, under CKC Bylaw 12.3 (c), I could not stand for election. In 2006, my wife of 52 years died, and I inherited her shares. All my shares I gave to my daughter Kim in 2007.

If elected I promise that I will not apply to become a judge, as most do, but use my time attending shows, listening, and at all meetings speaking on behalf of the Members. I believe that the Members are the Canadian Kennel Club and deserve a representative who will fight for their rights.

I am a retired cattle rancher and self employed businessmen with over 45 years exhibiting and breeding purebred dogs. I am seeking a second term on the CKC board of directors’ in this upcoming election.

Having served on numerous executive positions at All Breed Dog Clubs as well as Specialty Cubs, I am very well versed on the proper procedures at the board level.

I was a founding member of the Stampede City Whippet Club as well as the Foothills Graze Hound Club. At the present time I am the President of the Sagebrush Working and Herding Club of BC, and the Show Chairman for the Kamloops and District Kennel Club.

What I bring to the board table is a no-nonsense, common sense approach, with the members being represented fairly at all times. With a background in cattle as well as dogs I have a strong understanding of the Animal Pedigree Act. The strengths I bring to the CKC Board table is making decisions based on what is best for our membership and our sport of dogs.

My involvement in purebred dogs started in 1982 when I attended my first conformation shows. I quickly developed a keen interest in the sport of dogs and, worked for many professional handlers, including Sally and Mark George, in Northern California, Tim Brazier, Mark Shanoff and Carol Graham. I have had the privilege of working with some truly amazing dogs.

Eventually I relocated to Calgary where, in partnership with Raymond Yurick, I handled all breeds – most notably Am. Can. Ch. Clarion Camelot Communique, Canada’s top Non-Sporting dog and #10 All breeds in 2008.

In 2007 I took on the job of editor for Terrier Type, a unique magazine that chronicled the history and achievements of the Terrier since 1961.

With over three decades of dedication to the sport, I am passionate about purebred dogs and offer you my track record of success. Let me use my skills in marketing, planning and strategizing, coupled with my ongoing education in social media. I believe social networking has the potential of being one of the most valuable tools in the delivery of information.
